Je consacre ce témoignage à l'aspect rustique et resistant du Maine Coon tel que je le connais quotidiennement.
Tout d'abord,ce beau chat de race,originaire du Maine,est pourvu d'une fourrure tout de même soumise à petit entretien.

I would like to dedicate this testimony to the rustic and resistant aspect of the Maine Coon, as I experience it every day.
First of all, let me point out that this beautiful breed cat, native of the State of Maine, has a coat that needs some grooming.


Vorrei dedicare questa testimonianza all’aspetto rustico e resistente del Maine Coon, come posso osservarlo quotidianamente.

 Prima di tutto, questo magnifico gatto di razza, originario dello stato del Maine, possiede un pelo che deve, malgrado tutto, essere sottomesso ad un minimo di cure.





Il est de mon point de vue nécessaire de le brosser régulièrement,non seulement pour aider à l'évacuation des poils morts qui peuvent faire des paquets,mais aussi parce qu'il aime ce geste situé entre tendresse et respect pour son poil mi-long.
From my point of view, it’s necessary to brush it regularly, not only to help it retrieve dead hairs that would otherwise get tied together forming hair balls, but also because the cat’s loves to be brushed as it’s a gesture between tenderness and respect for his half-long hair.


Dal mio punto di vista, é necessario pettinarlo regolarmente, non solo per aiutarlo ad eliminare i peli morti, che altrimenti potrebbero formare dei mucchi, ma anche perché ama essere pettinato, essendo questo un gesto tra amore e rispetto per il suo pelo semi-lungo.

 




Par delà toute bonne ou mauvaise réputation je souhaite évoquer l'excellente resistance de ces chats puissants,grimpeurs,joueurs,chasseurs mais également patients avec l'homme,sensibles et décontractés.

 Leaving aside any good or bad reputation they might have, I would like to share with you the excellent resistance of these strong, climbers, playful, hunting cats, who can also be very patient with humans, sensitive and relaxed.

Lasciando da parte qualsiasi buona o cattiva reputazione che potrebbe avere, vorrei evocare l’eccellente resistenza di questi gatti potenti, che amano arrampicarsi, giocare e cacciare, ma che sono anche molto pazienti con l’uomo, sensibili e rilassati.





Les Maine Coons que je connais,tant en France,qu'en Allemagne et même Outre-Atlantique s'adaptent par leur caractère tranquille à bien des situations complexes pour un chat, telles que se laisser porter par un enfant sans bouger ni sortir griffe ,passer des heures en kennel durant un long voyage en voiture sans pleurer,accepter facilement de se promener dehors même lorsqu'il fait froid,s'adapter au harnais et à la laisse comme un chien de petite taille,tout ceci étant bien sûr aléatoire mais assez constant dans le caractère général du Maine Coon.

 Maine Coons I know in France, Germany or even Over-seas, thanks to their quiet character, can adapt easily to complex situations, such as being grabbed by a kid without moving nor scratching, staying long hours in their kennel without crying during a car trip, walking around outside even when with low temperatures, adapting to the harness and to the leash as a small dog would… all this is, of course, quite random and varies from one cat to the other but it’s nevertheless quite constant in the Maine Coon’s character.

I Maine Coons che conosco, sia in Francia, che in Germania o anche oltre Atlantico, si adattano facilmente, grazie al loro carattere tranquillo, a situazioni che potrebbero essere complicate per un gatto, come essere presi in braccio da un bambino senza muoversi e senza graffiare, passare ore nella gabbia per un lungo viaggio in macchina, senza piangere, accettare facilmente il fatto di passeggiare all’esterno anche quando fa freddo, adattarsi alla pettorina e al guinzaglio come lo farebbe un cane di piccola taglia… tutto ciò, ovviamente, è aleatorio e può variare da gatto a gatto, ma è malgrado tutto abbastanza costante nel carattere generale del Maine Coon.







Pour ne pas faire l'impasse sur les maladies,je souhaite tout de même insister sur l'idée qu'un chat reste un chat et que malgré sa rusticité,le Maine Coon est soumis comme les autres chats à diverses pathologies possibles.

Not to leave aside illnesses, I would like to insist on the fact that a cat remains a cat, and although Maine Coons are more rustic than others, they can nevertheless be confronted to different kinds of pathologies.

Non voglio assolutamente lasciare da parte le malattie e vorrei insistere sul fatto che un gatto rimane un gatto e che malgrado il Maine Coon sia più rustico di altre razze, viene sottomesso anche lui come gli altri gatti, a diverse patologie.

 

Mise à part la fameuse HCM(Hypertrophie Cardiomyopathique),dont on affuble trop souvent cette belle race,alors que les maladies cardiaques sont fréquentes chez le chat en général,il y a bien sûr les parasites internes et externes auxquels les Maine Coons n'échappent pas s'ils ne sont pas traités correctement.

Except for the unfortunately famous HCM (Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy), which is too often wrongly related only to this beautiful breed (as cardiac illnesses are frequent in the feline world in general) you have of course the internal and external parasites that Maine Coons cannot avoid if not treated correctly against them.

 Eccetto la famosa CMI (Cardiomiopatia Ipertrofica), che é, ingiustamente, troppo sovente associata a questa bella razza (malgrado il fatto che le malattie cardiache in generale siano frequenti in tutti i gatti) ci sono evidentemente anche tutti i parassiti interni e esterni che i Maine Coon non possono evitare, se non essendo correttamente trattati preventivamente.

 Également,et même si actuellement l'on se doit de bien vacciner son chat par prévention contre certaines maladies,le Maine Coon,dont la croissance est lente,peut tomber malade,notamment lors de ses pics de croissance,lors de fort stress ou même lorsque ses habitudes sont chamboulées.
I would also point out that, although you should vaccinate your cat regularly as to prevent serious illnesses, Maine Coons, who tend to have a very slow growth, might get ill, especially during growth’s peaks, or when their stressed or even when you change their habits.

Bisogna anche dire, malgrado il fatto che al giorno d’oggi é un dovere di vaccinare preventivamente il proprio gatto contro certe malattie, che il Maine Coon, che tende ad avere una crescita lenta, può ammalarsi specialmente: - durante i suoi picchi di crescita, - se sottomesso a dello stress o anche quando le sue abitudini vengono cambiate. 




Cela ne signifie pas que le Maine Coon a une santé fragile,mais bien que c'est avant tout un être vivant qui a ses hauts et ses bas.

 This doesn’t mean that the Maine Coon has a fragile health, but simply that it’s a living being, with its up and downs.

Ciò non vuol dire che il Maine Coon é fragile di salute, ma semplicemente che é un essere vivente con i suoi alti e i suoi bassi.


Cependant,j'ai pu remarquer en élevage,donc en population regroupée qu'il n'est pas si malade que l'on veut bien l'évoquer de temps à autre!
Nevertheless, I had the chance to notice while breeding (therefore in large population’s groups) that it’s not as ill as we tend to imagine it!!

Nonostante questo, ho potuto notare in allevamento e quindi su una popolazione di gruppo, che non é poi così malato come si tende ad immaginarlo!! 





Pour illustrer,je puis par exemple évoquer la très bonne santé de mes étalons qui vivent majoritairement dehors en enclos,avec une chattière toujours ouverte et sans restriction allant de leurs appartements dans la maison à l'exterieur.

Posso, per esempio, parlarvi della buonissima salute dei miei maschi, che vivono la maggior parte del tempo all’esterno, in recinto, con la gattaiola sempre aperta e senza restrizioni, in modo da poter andare liberamente dai loro “appartamenti” in casa all’esterno e viceversa.

  


Mes femelles ont la même liberté d'entrer et sortir,par tous les temps,et je remarque qu'elles aiment passer de longs moments dehors qu'il neige ou qu'il vente.
My queens have the same freedom to go from inside to outside and back, and I can say that they love to stay long hours outside, be it snowy or windy weather.

Le mie femmine godono della stessa libertà di entrare ed uscire quando vogliono e qualsiasi tempo faccia, ed ho potuto notare che amano stare ore ed ore fuori, che nevichi o che ci sia vento.

  




Je n'ai à ce jour constaté qu'un seul très gros rhume en 3 ans.Ce n'était pas un des Maine Coons,mais mon bon gros Sacré de Birmanie,lui aussi très résistant,qui a eu un peu de mal à supporter la dernière vague d'intense humidité de cet automne.
In three years time, I only noticed once a big cold. It was not even one of the Maine Coons but my big sweet Birman, also a very resistant cat, but who had some difficulties to deal with the highly humid weather we had this autumn.

In tre anni, mi é capitato una volta sola di dover curare un grosso raffreddore. Non era uno dei Maine Coon ma il mio grosso batufolo Sacro di Birmania, anche lui molto resistente ma che ha avuto qualche difficoltà a sopportare l’ultima ondata di umidità intensa di quest’autunno. 

 

Chez les femelles,en élevage, je tiens à le souligner fortement,il est normal que,lorsqu'il y a des chattes gestantes et allaitantes quelques soucis immunitaires bénins apparaissent.

 For breeding queens, I must strongly underline, that it’s normal that pregnant or nursing females might have some benign immunizing problems.

Per le femmine in allevamento, vorrei insistere sul fatto che é normale che le gatte gestanti o che allattano possano avere piccoli problemi immunitari del tutto benigni.


Loin de moi l'envie de dépeindre un élevage tout rose et tout joli.Ce serait un mensonge.Mais je dois avouer que mes "filles" se remettent rapidement de leurs ennuis de santé liés à la vie en communauté s'ils sont pris à temps et bien soignés avec de stricts protocoles sanitaires.
I don’t want to say that my breeding is highly easy-going. That would be a lie. But I must admit that my ladies recover quite quickly when they have health problems related to their community life, if the problems are dealt with on time, and looked after following strict sanitary protocols.  

 Non voglio dire che nel mio allevamento non ci sono mai problemi. Sarebbe mentire. Ma devo ammettere che tutto sommato le mie femmine recuperano facilmente dai loro problemi di salute legati alla vita in comunità se curate a tempo e seguendo protocolli sanitari rigorosi.

 Que dire de plus alors?

Le Maine Coon n'est pas un chat fragile...il est  rustique et  adaptable.
What can we say more, then?
Maine Coon is not a fragile cat… it’s rustic and adaptable.

 Il Maine Coon non è un gatto fragile… è un gatto rustico e che si adatta.







Le Maine Coon est, hélas!!! parfois catalogué comme un chat "cardiaque", mais il existe à l'heure actuelle des dépistages performants qui permettent aux éleveurs de bien surveiller le si grand coeur de ces si beaux chats...on appelle cela l'échographie.Ce dépistage répandu et maintenant au point concerne toutes les races félines et devrait de préférence être pratiqué par un vétérinaire spécialisé en cardiologie.

Maine Coon is unfortunately, often seen as a « cardiac » cat, but nowadays performing methods exist, to enable breeders to monitor and check the big heart of these beautiful cats… it’s called echography. This tracking method is largely used and is totally reliable.  It concerns all the breeds and, preferably, it should be made by a specialised veterinary-cardiologist.

 Il Maine Coon é a volte, e sfortunatamente, catalogato come un gatto cardiaco, ma esistono al giorno d’oggi metodi efficaci che permettono agli allevatori di sorvegliare il grande cuore di questi bellissimi gatti… è l’ecografia. Questo metodo è ormai diffuso e dà risultati certi per qualsiasi razza felina e dovrebbe preferibilmente, essere praticato da un veterinario specializzato in cardiologia.

Le Maine Coon résiste bien aux fortes variations de température.

 Maine Coon is able to resist to high temperature variations.

 Il Maine Coon resiste bene alle forti variazioni di temperatura.


Il adapte naturellement son activité à ses conditions de vie.Il est également gros mangeur et il déploie ses dons de chasseur.
C'est aussi un grimpeur très performant.
It naturally adapts its activity to its living conditions. He’s also eating a lot and has great chasing gifts. It’s also a very performing climber.

Adatta naturalmente la sua attività fisica alle sue condizioni di vita. È anche un mangione e possiede un dono incontestabile per la caccia. 

È anche un arrampicatore molto efficace.





Le Maine Coon peut atteindre plus de 10 kg pour les mâles et plus de 6 kg pour les femelles,selon les lignées et les mariages.
Sur ce point,il est important de se renseigner et surtout de rencontrer les parents de son futur chaton...on peut alors se faire une idée du gabarit que pourrait atteindre le chaton qui nous a fait craquer, donc pas de surprise une fois le bébé devenu grand...voire...très grand!

Maine Coons’ males can weight up to more than 10 kg, and females up to more than 6 kg, depending on their lineage and on the marriages. It is therefore important to learn about and to meet the parents of your future kitten… you can then have an idea of the size the kitten will reach, so, no surprises when the kitten will grow up and become big… or even very big!

Il Maine Coon può pesare più di 10 kg per i maschi e più di 6 kg per le femmine, a seconda della stirpe e degli accoppiamenti. È dunque importante informarsi e soprattutto vedere di persona i genitori del suo futuro cucciolo… si può, in questo modo, avere un’idea della taglia che potrà raggiungere il cucciolo che ci interessa in modo da non avere sorprese quando il piccolo diventerà grande… o addirittura molto grande!
  

Malgré tout il faut savoir que l'on ne peut pas prédire à l'avance si l'on aura la chance d'avoir le Maine Coon de 13 kg tout en muscles dont rêvent tant de passionnés de la race.
Cela arrive quelquefois...très rarement.
Nevertheless, we can’t predict in advance if we are going to have the beautiful 13 kg of pure muscles Maine Coon that passionate people dream about. Sometimes it happens… but rarely.
Some breeders managed to adapt their breeding work with Maine Coons to apartments. I prefer to see them out in the green. I personally chose countryside, its joys and its difficulties too.
 

Tuttavia, non si può mai prevedere in anticipo e con certezza se si avrà la fortuna di avere il Maine Coon
di 13 kg di muscolo, che tutti gli appassionati della razza sognano di avere. Può capitare… ma è raro.

 
Il y a des éleveurs qui ont su adapter l'élevage du Maine Coon, en appartement.
Ma préférence est de les voir dans la verdure.Pour ma part,j'ai choisi la campagne,ses joies et ses difficultés aussi.

 Certi allevatori sono riusciti ad adattare l’allevamento del Maine Coon alla vita in appartamento. Io ho preferito scegliere il verde della campagna, con le sue gioie ma anche le sue difficoltà.




Quelques idées reçues sur le Maine Coon me paraissent à côté de la réalité également.
Some generally accepted ideas about Maine Coon also seem wrong to me.

Mi pare ci siano anche idee false che girano riguardo al Maine Coon.
En apparté de ce témoignage je tiens à les signaler ici:

Je lis parfois que le Maine Coon est un chat-chien... je donne donc mon opinion ce n'est pas tout à fait vrai!

Un chien a besoin de rapports sociaux hiérarchisés très clairs pour vivre heureux et équilibré,il vit en meute,ce n'est pas le cas du Maine Coon, qui, malgré sa très forte tendance à demeurer proche de ses maîtres est indépendant de la hiérarchie humaine telle qu'on voudrait la lui imposer.

Cependant,le Maine Coon s'accomode assez rapidement de la présence d'un chien,grand ou petit,pourvu que les deux sujets soient sociabilisés en ce sens.
Aside this testimony I would like to highlight this:

 I sometimes read that the Maine Coon is a dog-cat… to my opinion, it’s not totally true!

 A dog needs its social relations to be organised into a strict hierarchy in order to live a happy and equilibrate life. It lives in pack and this is not the case of the Maine Coon, who, although being very close to its owners, is independent from the human hierarchy that we would like to impose him.

 Nevertheless, Maine Coon easily adapts to a dog’s presence, big or small, as far as both subjects have been socialised to that effect.

In margine a questa testimonianza, vorrei dire quanto segue:

Mi è capitato di leggere che il Maine Coon è un gatto-cane… secondo me non è completamente vero!

Un cane ha bisogno di rapporti sociali gerarchizzati chiari per vivere una vita felice ed equilibrata e vive in muta. Non è affatto il caso per il Maine Coon che, malgrado la sua forte tendenza a rimanere vicino ai suoi padroni, è indipendente dalla gerarchia umana che gli vorremmo imporre.

Malgrado ciò, il Maine Coon si adatta abbastanza rapidamente alla presenza di un cane, grande o piccolo, se ambi sono stati socializzati in questo senso.

  






Il comprend certes très vite certaines limites et/ou libertés,m'est avis également qu'il est très intelligent ,très bien dans sa tête s'il a été correctement sociabilisé par sa mère tout d'abord,et habitué dès sa naissance au contact humain et à la vie domestique chez son éleveur.

 It quickly understands some limits and/or freedoms. It’s also very intelligent and feels comfortable with himself if it has been correctly socialised first by its mother and got used to human contact and domestic life by its breeder.

 Capisce molto bene certi limiti e/o libertà. É anche molto intelligente ed ha una mente sana se é stato socializzato correttamente dalla mamma ed abituato fin dalla nascita al contatto umano e alla vita domestica dall’allevatore.


Pourquoi donc en faire une sorte de chien alors que c'est un chat? Un grand chat oui! mais pas un chien.

L'idée reçue que le Maine Coon discute avec son maître n'est pas vérifiée non plus et est un peu extrapolée je trouve.

Certains sujets sont très bavards,d'autres très silencieux mais plus démonstratifs en matière de calins par exemple.

Tout ceci ne concerne déjà plus le côté rustique du Maine Coon mais plutôt son comportement général tel qu'il est selectionné ou non par les éleveurs de cette magnifique race!
Why, then, would you want to make a dog out of it, if it’s a cat? Definitely a big cat! But not a dog.

The generally accepted idea that the Maine Coon talks with his owner is not proved either and is a little bit exaggerated, I think.

 Some subjects are very talkative, others are very quiet but maybe more tender, for example.

 All this is not about the rustic side of the Maine Coon anymore, but more about his general behaviour as it is, or not, selected by the breeders of this wonderful breed!

Perché, dunque, volerne fare un cane, se è un gatto? Un gatto grande, sí! Ma non un cane.

 Anche l’idea che il Maine Coon può “parlare” con il suo padrone non è mai stata verificata ed é, a mio avviso, un po’ esagerata.

 Certi individui sono molto chiacchieroni, altri più silenziosi ma molto più coccoloni, per esempio.

 Ma tutto ciò non riguarda già più l’aspetto rustico del Maine Coon se non ché il suo comportamento in generale tale che selezionato, o no, dagli allevatori di questa magnifica razza!
